Suggested WiFi Equipment (Upgrade to a MESH WiFi System)

Last Updated : October 04 2023

Your WATTS system will work with every major WiFi equipment brand on the market. The only products that we hazard customers against are the equipment being supplied by your Internet Service Provider when you sign up for Internet services. This in our opinion is the least stable, least secure, and least compatible WiFi systems on the market.

We strongly suggest that you take a look at the equipment listed below. We have provided several supported options at various price points.

If security is a concern for you, we highly suggest you reach out to WiFi specialists in your area and research professionally installed equipment from companies such as Meraki (cisco) and Ubiquity.

We strongly suggest that all customers upgrade to a modern WiFi system that supports MESH technology. A MESH WiFi system allows you to have multiple access points (WiFi Devices) throughout your home like a repeater, but unlike a repeater, they all talk together and work as a singular cohesive unit.

While some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) such as Telus in Western Canada are now offering their own budget-friendly MESH system we HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying away from these systems! (WE HAZARD BUYING THESE UNITS WITH STRONG CAUTION.)

For the price, there are SIGNIFICANTLY better systems out there, some of which are even cheaper and more widely supported.

For more DIY options, we suggest the following :

  • Google Nest WiFi Pro
$269.99 CAD at the time of this article
The Google Nest Pro is a great option for any home user. It is powerful but also simple to configure. Offered by one of the world's most innovative tech companies, it is a very powerful, secure and user-friendly option. It does come in at a premium, but most customers find that by saving money by reducing their internet plan due to un-used internet speed, they can have a better experience using the internet by reinvesting those savings into their equipment such as the Google Nest WiFi Pro.
  • Tp-Link Deco WiFi 6
$180 CAD at the time of this article
This is the best budget WiFi system we have found that does not sacrifice any features. With state-of-the-art WiFi 6 enhancement and an easy-to-configure system, it is a very stable setup that can be enhanced quite easily for a lower cost. It offers very similar features to the Google Nest but at a much lower cost.

For both of these systems, the price listed is for 1 unit. Most homes can get away with one or two of these units. You can not share between them. If you need to add on to these systems, it is best to add on an identical second unit. For example, do not try and connect a Google Nest access point to a Tp-Link access point. If you need to expand your coverage, and you have 1 Google Nest access point, simply buy a second identical unit and then add it to your system. They make this very easy to do.

Pro Tip :

If you are going to buy an aftermarket WiFi System (and we highly suggest that you do) you MUST ensure that your ISP (Internet Service Provider) disables your Modem's WiFi and does what is called most commonly "setting your modem in bridge mode". Not doing this will actually cause MORE issues for you. You can not use the router on your modem, and the router on the new equipment at the same time. They will cause conflicts. You will have a connection, but you will have very strange behaviours and random issues.
